Transcript

Lawrence County is a fifth class county, population of 86,000 around about. We have a lot of rural areas, but our county seat is the city of Newcastle.

During COVID, the eRecordings just began to boom because the courthouse was closed. We were doing the best that we could trying to figure it out as we went along. I mean, I remember eighty some eRecordings whereas before we’d have like twenty in a day. And I think that it has never really fallen off from that because I think people realized that they liked it.

Most of our documents that we get are electronic.

I would say a great deal actually come from out of state and that’s how they’re getting certified.

And that process works the same way. We’re reviewing the chain of title, the description, the parcel number, and they are being certified, but just electronically instead of a physical stamp.

I can remember the back and forth if you got a deed and a mortgage from a closing and there was something wrong. You had to reject it and mail it back. And now when you’re eRecording you just send it right back, tell them what the issue is. It takes most of the time five minutes we have the document back and that is very important.

I mean sometimes people are waiting for their documents to be reported before they can start construction or moving into a home, so it’s pretty amazing how everything’s evolved.

At one point, we had a lot of customers that were title searchers, so this room was very busy. We had a lot of customers coming to the counter, but then all of a sudden we started doing eRecordings. So the customers would come in, the attorneys, different law offices from outside of Lawrence County, any of the banks, they’re using eRecording far more than they are coming in, which has done great for our office. We’re not feeling as overwhelmed with the incoming customers because we’re dealing with the eRecordings.

Lawrence County is really ahead of the game. They really put the constituents first. They’re trying out different methods to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to submit, that they don’t have to come in person. And I think what that’s allowing is to reach a wider group of people if we just did it by hand.

It’s our goal to provide excellent customer service. That’s the first and foremost. That’s most important to me. We ask for the newest and the greatest stuff for our constituents, and GovOS is always on board and trying to do that for us.
